Yuri Fujii photoYuri Fujii and her family (including sisters Toshi and Kiyo) were incarcerated in the Puyallup Assembly Center and then in Minidoka. She left Minidoka in May 1943 for Clayton, Missouri. She attend the University of Chicago and graduated with degrees in home economics (1945) and biological science (1947). She trained for an additional year at the School of Dietetics at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and then worked as a dietician in various capacities.

She married Hiroshi Sugiyama, a microbiologist, in 1951 and had two daughters, Linda and Gayle. She and her family later moved to Madison, Wisconsin where her husband worked at Food Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin. After her husband’s death in 2005, Yuri Fujii Sugiyama moved to Oakland, California where she now lives.
